Horror Stories About Driving InstructorsWe hear of some complete horror stories about what has happened when people are trying to come to terms with Driving Anxiety Disorder, and in terms of how they have been treated by driving instructors. One example we were informed of was that of a lady who wanted to overcome panic attacks when driving on the motorway, and who went to a driving instructor, was asked to go straight onto a motorway. Stamping on The Brake PedalDriving Anxiety Disorder cases, as in the more severe examples, will, if they get into a situation whereby they get to a panic attack when driving, react by stamping on the brake pedal. It will not matter what type of road it is, they will stop the car. They will even stop dead in the middle of a motorway, regardless as to what may be coming along behind or what the flow of traffic is doing. The lady with the driving instructor above did exactly that. She had a panic attack when driving on a motorway, and even though she was in flowing traffic, she stamped on the brake. She stopped the car right where she was. |

In response to this the driving instructor, who clearly did not expect his student to behave in this way, managed to get the car to the hard shoulder. He then screamed at his student, telling her that she was a complete danger to herself and everyone else on the road, and should not be driving. Not very helpful advice when trying to find a cure for Driving Anxiety Disorder.
What you need to ask yourself, as a good place to start, is, just because you have started having panic attacks when driving, no matter what the type of road, does that means you have forgotten how to drive? The answer, of course, is no. You have not forgotten how to drive, so why would you need a driving instructor?
Although the condition has affected your ability to drive a car in certain road environments, the root of why you have a panic attack when driving, perhaps on the motorway, on bridges or driving down hills, doesn’t have a lot to do with driving. It has more to do with your brain recognising where you are and associating that environment as being somewhere life–threatening.
Think of it this way. If you have a friend who has a dog, and when you met that dog it bit you, every time you visited your friend thereafter, you would keep well away from the dog. That is because you have learned that dog may bite you.
Panic attacks when driving on certain roads happen because your brain has learned that the road you are on has something about it that will kill you. But in this case the road that induces the panic attack when driving, or at least raises your anxiety levels, has done nothing to hurt you. So, this is misfiled information.
Your brain has learned to trigger a panic attack when driving, so now you have to teach it how that environment is actually safe. That takes careful management and a good deal of time to achieve. You can’t just get onto a motorway, bridge or other problem location and tell yourself this time you are going to be okay. Your brain just will not listen to you.
If you are going to tackle a condition such as Driving Anxiety Disorder, speak to someone who can relate to what you are going through. Someone who understands what you have a panic attack when driving on a motorway, freak out if you have to drive across a bridge or on a hill. Speak to Ride Drive, because we probably understand more than anyone else in the UK what it is like to suffer Driving Anxiety Disorder.
