Problems driving at night affects some, but all, driving phobia cases. The situation does not have to be that of complete darkness, but circumstances where low light levels can be enough for some with dealing with thir driving phobia to experience anxiety.

For some, it is the fear of driving at a speed at which they can’t see far enough beyond the range of the headlights. Conversely, for others, it will be having limited range of vision that will be a comfort.

Problems driving at night, or in circumstances of reduced visibility, are not helped by some people’s inability to focus on near and far objects at the same time. This is a contributory issue and can create a sense of imbalance.

Low light levels change the contrast of the image being viewed as compared with daylight and some people are more sensitive to this. The extreme changes in light levels can be a problem, such as the brightness of oncoming headlights followed immediately by relative darkness once the vehicle has passed.

Low light levels cause the pupils of the eye to dilate, so as to let in as much light as possible, but the side effect of this is that of creating a very shallow depth of field. What this means is, the eye’s range of focus is quite short, near to far distance, and can therefore only retain a slice of the image in sharp definition.

Problems driving at night, by the way, does not identify someone as having driving phobia, but is merely a symptom that may be displayed by those who are trying to overcome anxiety when driving. Poor driver training, or the pure lack of driving experience, are also associated with problems driving at night.
